Karaoke / bar open-mic / house PA mono fold: vocal, backing, and room checklist

Vocal mics, karaoke backing tracks, and room capture feel thick on stage wedges and in the booth. On house PA, phone livestream, or Bluetooth speaker, vocal body and track midrange often thin or cancel against parallel paths that carry the same energy a few milliseconds later. That is usually polarity, path priority (one hero vocal, one hero backing), and a stereo track bed that was never folded before send. Fix path priority and small delays first. Frequency-aware phase repair belongs only after residual L/R fights remain on stereo beds before mono fold.

PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux) from Riverflux Audio. Frequency-aware phase rotation for leftover L/R fights on stereo material. It is not a karaoke vocal processor, not a widener, and not a substitute for mic placement or mono audition of the PA or phone bus. Polarity and timing first; PHIXER after residual spectral fights.

What karaoke / open-mic phase failure sounds like

Fast mono audition (about 60 seconds)

  1. Solo the house PA / stream / mix bus (not only booth headphones or wedges). Flip a utility to mono.
  2. A/B vocal muted vs open under backing/room. Note what disappears: body, presence, track midrange, attack.
  3. Solo pairs: vocal vs backing, vocal vs room, stereo track bed vs mono fold.
  4. Check correlation on the delivery bus, then with vocal muted vs full.

Order of operations (before spectral phase rotation)

1. Polarity between vocal and room / second mic / backing bleed

Flip vocal vs room, or dual vocal mics, when body or presence returns immediately. Guide: polarity vs phase. Related: club / PA, live FOH.

2. Small delay align vocal to the hero PA / track image

Handhelds and lavs often arrive earlier than room or board returns. A few samples of delay on the vocal (or nudge to the hero PA image) often restores body better than any widener.

3. One hero vocal and one hero backing to the PA / stream bus

Do not send dual vocals, room, and stereo karaoke track all hot into the house PA or livestream. Pick a hero vocal and a hero backing image, keep extras muted or low. Parallel stacks are classic hollow-body on phone fold.

4. Prefer hero PA vocal as the body; quieter room color

The room should color ambience, not replace the hero vocal for the PA mix. If room sits at full level under a loud vocal, mono fold almost always hollows body. Pull the room first.

5. Skip wideners and Haas on karaoke beds before fold

Short-delay width and stereo imagers make booth headphones huge and phones hollow. Keep critical vocal and track body centered for PA and phone.

6. Only then audition residual L/R spectral fights

If a stereo karaoke track must stay stereo and fold still hollows a band after the steps above, gentle frequency-aware phase rotation can help. Prove it with mono A/B, rotator bypassed vs engaged.

Bar / open-mic / karaoke checklist (to send)

1. Label vocal vs backing vs room vs stream paths

Name hero vocal, second mic, karaoke track, room, and stream send so operators know what hits the house PA or livestream. Ambiguous stacks get left open and comb on fold.

2. Mono-check PA / delivery bus alone, then with full mix

Solo vocal body and presence in mono. Then open backing midrange in mono. Note fights between room color and hero vocal.

3. Watch phone, BT speaker, and house PA destinations

Most patrons and remote viewers hear mono or near-mono. Guides: club / PA, car / BT, TikTok / Reels.

4. Optional null / mono workflow before open mic

Host-agnostic habit before doors or first singer: master bus mono checklist.

When NOT to use PHIXER here

Quick path: Solo PA/delivery bus in mono → polarity vocal vs room/second mic → delay-align vocal → one hero vocal + one hero backing → quieter room under hero → skip Haas/imagers → mono-check with full mix → PHIXER only for leftover stereo cancellation on a track bed → fold again for PA / phone / BT send.
